1% for the Planet :: Panel Discussion at Patagonia Sydney
Last night I attended an incredible and inspiring event by 1% for the Planet at the Patagonia store in Sydney. A panel discussion on how brands can do better for the planet. It was so exciting seeing so many business owners and individuals come together to discuss being responsible in business and how as brands we can always do better.
At Spindrift Collections we have been a business member of 1% for the Planet for almost 3 years now, back when we joined in 2016 we were the only jewellery brand member in Australia and its so exciting to see how the 1% movement has grown since then, with so many more businesses joining each year. Last year the dedicated network of 1% for the Planet including businesses, individuals and donors gave back over $24 million to environmental nonprofits all around the world. I am proud that Spindrift Collections is a part of this.
My inspiration for joining Spindrift to 1% for the Planet came from reading the book by ‘Let My People Go Surfing’ by Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner of Patagonia. If you have not read it then I really recommend it.
What we love about being a 1% for the Planet member is the transparency it gives for you our customers. Our giving is certified by 1% for the Planet, so you know that 1% of every sale we make is given back to environmental not for profits, the value of which is so much clearer than a percentage of profits.
Last night we heard from an amazing panel of speakers including Jon Cocina, COO for 1% For The Planet, Shannon Bourke, Environmental and Social Initiatives Manager at Patagonia, Stuart Palmer, Head of Ethics for Australian Ethical, Abigail Forsyth, Founder of KeepCup and Simone Awramenko, Thrivability Manager at Koala. Each of these speakers, brought such insight and knowledge on how as businesses we can continue to work together to do better.
Jon Cocina from 1% For The Planet said “When you look at the state of our planet, it’s being threatened in ways unlike any other point in history. You look at issues like climate change, plastic pollution, declining biodiversity, the sustainability of our food systems- the list goes on and on…. These issues are real, they’re significant, there’s an urgency- we need to do something about that as soon as possible.”

I believe that its is so important that we all do our part to make a difference, in business and also as individuals. Our planet is so precious and of course it is our home (and the only one we have) so we need to work together to protect it.
